The engineer, the meshes of the net having given way, had been carried offby a wave. His dog also had disappeared. The faithful animal hadvoluntarily leaped out to help his master. “Forward,” cried the reporter;and all four, Spilett, Herbert, Pencroft, and Neb, forgetting theirfatigue, began their search. Poor Neb shed bitter tears, giving way todespair at the thought of having lost the only being he loved on earth.
    工程师从网眼上掉下来以后，就被海浪卷走了。吊篮里的狗也失踪了。这只忠实的狗主动地跳出去营救它的主人。“前进啊！”通讯记者喊道；他们四个人——史佩莱、赫伯特、潘克洛夫和纳布——全都忘记了疲倦，到处寻找。可怜的纳布痛哭流涕，一想到世界上自己唯一心爱的人已经丧命，他不禁感到灰心。 (more…)

All at once the reporter sprang up, and telling the sailor that he wouldrejoin them at that same place, he climbed the cliff in the direction whichthe Negro Neb had taken a few hours before. Anxiety hastened his steps, forhe longed to obtain news of his friend, and he soon disappeared round anangle of the cliff. Herbert wished to accompany him. 
   突然，通讯记者跳起来，叫水手在原地等他，然后他就顺着几小时以前纳布所爬过的方向攀上了悬崖。他急于想知道朋友的下落，因此急急忙忙地加快了步子，马上就绕过峭壁的拐角不见了。赫伯特想跟他一起去。

Pencroft’s first care, after unloading the raft, was to render the cavehabitable by stopping up all the holes which made it draughty. Sand,stones, twisted branches, wet clay, closed up the galleries open to thesouth winds. One narrow and winding opening at the side was kept, to leadout the smoke and to make the fire draw. The cave was thus divided intothree or four rooms, if such dark dens with which a donkey would scarcelyhave been contented deserved the name. But they were dry, and there wasspace to stand upright, at least in the principal room, which occupied thecenter. The floor was covered with fine sand, and taking all in all theywere well pleased with it for want of a better.
潘克洛夫把木筏上的干柴卸下来以后，首先就忙着要把那些灌风的窟窿堵上，使山洞能够住人。用沙土、石头、弯枝、烂泥，封闭了面迎着南风的洞口。旁边留下了一道弯曲的细缝，既能通烟，又能拔火。这个洞窟就这样分成了三四间房（假如还配得上称房间的话），这里面光线黑暗，野兽才满意哩。但是洞里却很干燥，中央的主要房间还可以站直身子。他们在地上又铺了一层细沙。这一切布置妥当之后，他们认为非常满意，因为除此以外再也找不到更好的地方了。

The inventory of the articles possessed by these castaways from the clouds,thrown upon a coast which appeared to be uninhabited, was soon made out.They had nothing, save the clothes which they were wearing at the time ofthe catastrophe. We must mention, however, a note-book and a watch whichGideon Spilett had kept, doubtless by inadvertence, not a weapon, not atool, not even a pocket-knife; for while in the car they had thrown outeverything to lighten the balloon. The imaginary heroes of Daniel Defoe orof Wyss, as well as Selkirk and Raynal shipwrecked on Juan Fernandez and onthe archipelago of the Aucklands, were never in such absolute destitution.Either they had abundant resources from their stranded vessels, in grain,cattle, tools, ammunition, or else some things were thrown up on the coastwhich supplied them with all the first necessities of life. But here, notany instrument whatever, not a utensil. From nothing they must supplythemselves with everything.

Gideon Spilett was standing motionless on the shore, his arms crossed,gazing over the sea, the horizon of which was lost towards the east in athick black cloud which was spreading rapidly towards the zenith. The windwas already strong, and increased with the decline of day. The whole skywas of a threatening aspect, and the first symptoms of a violent storm wereclearly visible.
吉丁·史佩莱站在海边，两臂交叉在胸前，一动也不动地凝视着大海，东方的水平线上遮着一层层浓厚的乌云，它飞快地往头顶上扩张开来。风已经很大，随着夜色的降临，天变得更冷了。天空呈现出一幅险恶的景象，可以清楚地看出，这是暴风雨的前奏。 (more…)
